Affogato Espresso Ice Cream

Advertisements

This is without a doubt one of my favorite desserts! An affogato is an espresso-based dessert that you’ll find on many Italian restaurants’ menus, as well as at cafes serving espressos.

The full name is actually “affogato al cafe” or “drowned in coffee,” in Italian. This yummy concoction consists of a scoop of light ice cream with a shot of hot espresso poured over the top. I like to finish it with a dash of cinnamon. The bitterness of the espresso acts as a nice counterpoint to the sweet creaminess of the ice cream.

  • 1/2 cup boiling water
  • 1 tablespoon espresso powder

Whisk the boiling water and espresso powder in a 1 cup glass measuring cup until the powder is dissolved, or use an espresso machine to make 4 shots of espresso. Scoop 1/2 cup of the gelato or ice cream into each of 4 dessert bowls or glasses. Pour 2 tablespoons or 1 shot of hot espresso over each. Top with the whipped cream and serve immediately.
